Do you need red filtering for achromatopsia without an extremely dark lens?

These achromatopsia fit-over glasses use a light red 40% VLT lens, giving specialty red filtering while still allowing substantially more light through than very dark red medical filters.

They were designed for people with achromatopsia, also called rod monochromacy, who may experience intense light sensitivity and visual discomfort in bright conditions. The red filtering changes which wavelengths reach the eyes and may make bright environments more comfortable for some wearers.

They are designed to fit over many corrective eyeglasses, so prescription glasses can stay on underneath.

Why would someone with achromatopsia want a red lens?

Achromatopsia can cause severe light sensitivity, reduced visual clarity and difficulty functioning in bright environments.

Red filters are commonly used because they strongly change the balance of visible light reaching the eyes. For some people with achromatopsia or rod monochromacy, this can:
