NoIR Filter 08 Extra-Dark Grey-Green Retinitis Pigmentosa Glasses – 1% VLT

What are the best glasses for retinitis pigmentosa in very bright light?

If ordinary sunglasses still feel too bright, NoIR Filter 08 retinitis pigmentosa glasses provide exceptionally strong light reduction. The extra-dark grey-green lens has just 1% VLT, meaning it allows approximately 1% of visible light through.

NoIR lists Filter 08 for retinitis pigmentosa, corneal pathology, glare, and significant light sensitivity/photophobia. These glasses do not treat an eye condition; they are designed to reduce the amount of light reaching the eyes.

Why would someone choose a 1% VLT lens?

Filter 08 is for shoppers who need much more light reduction than ordinary sunglasses provide.

With only 1% VLT, this is an extra-dark specialty filter intended primarily for very bright outdoor conditions. If your main problem is mild glare or occasional brightness, this lens will probably be darker than you need.

These retinitis pigmentosa glasses are better suited to someone thinking:

“Even my darkest sunglasses still let in too much light.”

What does the grey-green lens do?

Unlike amber, orange or red specialty filters, Filter 08 uses an extra-dark grey-green tint. It provides very strong brightness and glare reduction without the appearance of a brightly colored lens.

The darker tint may be useful for people whose eyes are particularly uncomfortable in intense outdoor light.

When would I wear NoIR Filter 08?

Filter 08 is intended for very bright or full-light environments, including situations such as:

  • Bright sunny outdoor conditions
  • Walking or spending time outside
  • Outdoor sporting or spectator events
  • Bright environments with strong reflected glare
  • Situations where ordinary sunglasses are not dark enough

Because Filter 08 transmits only about 1% of visible light, it is not intended for dim or low-light environments.

Can I drive while wearing Filter 08?

No. A 1% VLT lens is far too dark for normal driving. These glasses are intended for severe brightness and glare control, not driving eyewear.

Can I wear these over prescription glasses?

Yes. This listing includes several fit-over frame styles designed to fit over corrective eyewear.

The main difference between the choices is the amount of room inside the frame and the style of coverage around your existing glasses.

Which size should I choose?

Measure the overall width of your prescription glasses from the outside edge of one side to the outside edge of the other. Choose a fit-over that is slightly wider than your eyewear so it can sit comfortably around it.

Frame OptionSizeApprox. Width

Removable Top ShieldLarge143 mm / 5.63 in
Removable Top ShieldXL148 mm / 5.83 in

Standard Fit-Over – Frame 53Large146 mm / 5.75 in
Standard Fit-Over – Frame 53XXL159 mm / 6.26 in
Universal – Frame 700Large144 mm / 5.67 in
What is the difference between the frame styles?

Removable Top Shield provides additional coverage above the eyes and is available in the widest range of sizes: Small through XL.

Standard Fit-Over is a traditional fit-over style designed to surround corrective glasses and is available in Medium, Large and XL.

Universal Frame 700 is a larger universal-style fit-over and measures approximately 144 mm / 5.67 inches wide.

If your corrective glasses are close to the maximum measurement for a frame, move up to the next available size rather than choosing a fit that may be too tight.

Are these good for mild light sensitivity?

Probably not. 1% VLT is extremely dark. Someone with mild or moderate light sensitivity will generally be better served by a lighter NoIR filter.

Filter 08 is intended for people who need exceptionally strong reduction of visible brightness, including some people with retinitis pigmentosa or severe photophobia.
