Amber tinted glasses are a good choice when glare makes details harder to see or when you want more contrast than a neutral gray lens provides. The warm amber color helps separate objects from their backgrounds and can make edges and details appear more defined.
Eschenbach Ambelis lenses also reduce blue light and provide 100% UVA and UVB protection. Instead of offering just one darkness level, Ambelis lets you choose the amount of tint that works best for where and how you plan to wear them.
The percentage tells you how dark the tint is. The higher the percentage, the darker the lens. It does not mean visible light transmission.
| Lens Tint | Consider This Tint For |
|---|---|
| 15% Light Amber | The lightest option. Good when you want amber contrast with only a small amount of darkening—such as indoors, at a computer or in softer/overcast light. |
| 50%-15% Gradient | Darker at the top and lighter below. Helpful when overhead or straight-ahead light bothers you but you want a brighter view when looking down to read or work. |
| 65% Medium Amber | A noticeably darker everyday tint for brighter environments, daytime driving and outdoor use when more glare reduction is wanted. |
| 75% Polarized Amber | Best choice when reflected glare is the problem—such as glare from roads, pavement, water or vehicle surfaces. Especially useful outdoors and for daytime driving. |
| 85% Dark Amber | The darkest option for bright outdoor conditions or people who want substantially more light reduction. Not intended for low-light or nighttime use. |
If you want better contrast along with more control over glare and brightness, amber or brown lenses are a strong choice. They can help details stand out more clearly in bright, hazy or changing light while giving the view a warmer, more natural appearance than yellow lenses.
Yellow lenses are better when your main goal is to boost contrast while keeping things bright, especially in lower-light, cloudy or overcast conditions. Amber or brown lenses are usually the better choice for brighter daytime use because they add contrast while also reducing more overall brightness and glare.
The Ambelis frame includes top, bottom and side shields to help reduce light entering around the lenses. This extra coverage can be especially helpful for people bothered by glare or light coming from the sides.
Eschenbach also lists Ambelis as prescription-correctable, and the frame can be used over compatible existing spectacles. Fit will depend on the size and shape of your current eyewear.
| Size | Frame Size | Bridge |
|---|---|---|
| Small | 54 mm / 2.13 in. | 16 mm / 0.63 in. |
| Large | 57 mm / 2.24 in. | 16 mm / 0.63 in. |
They can be a good choice for daytime driving because amber lenses can improve contrast and help reduce distracting glare. The 75% polarized option is especially useful when reflected glare from pavement, vehicles or other surfaces is a problem.
Dark tinted lenses should not be used for nighttime driving because they reduce the amount of available light reaching your eyes.
Polarized lenses are designed specifically to reduce strong reflected glare. If glare bouncing off roads, water or shiny surfaces bothers you, the 75% polarized amber lens may be worth choosing over a standard tint.
If you use phones, dashboards or other LCD screens frequently, keep in mind that polarized lenses can sometimes make a screen appear darker or different when viewed at certain angles.
The gradient lens is darker across the upper portion of the lens and becomes lighter toward the bottom. It lets you block more light while looking straight ahead while keeping things brighter when you look downward—useful for reading, paperwork or other close tasks.
Yes, depending on the tint. The 15% Light Amber is the best choice for indoor use when you want better contrast with only mild darkening. It can be helpful for computer work, reading, paperwork, crafts, watching TV, shopping under bright store lighting, or working in offices with harsh fluorescent or LED lights. The 50%-15% gradient can also be useful in mixed lighting, such as working near bright windows where you want more protection looking straight ahead but a lighter view when looking down. The darker 65%, 75% and 85% choices are better suited to progressively brighter conditions.
