NoIR Filter 21 cataract sunglasses are designed for people who need noticeable glare reduction in brighter outdoor conditions without choosing an extremely dark lens. The medium gray lens has 28% VLT, meaning it allows approximately 28% of visible light through.
Filter 21 is specifically listed for cataracts, glaucoma and glare, as well as outdoor activities such as sports, running and cycling.
Several available frame styles are designed to fit over corrective eye wear but can also be worn without eyeglasses
NoIR specifically identifies cataract as one of the low-vision conditions associated with Filter 21. The medium gray tint reduces the amount of visible light reaching the eyes, which may make bright environments and glare more comfortable for some people with cataracts. Individual tint preference varies. These cataract sunglasses are available in several fit-over styles for people who wear prescription eyeglasses.
Yes. Glaucoma is also specifically listed by NoIR for Filter 21. Its 28% VLT provides considerably more light reduction than NoIR’s lighter gray Filter 20, while remaining substantially lighter than the darker gray Filters 22 and 23.
Filter 21 is a medium gray lens with 28% VLT.
That means it:
It is a good middle-ground option for shoppers who need more light reduction than a lightly tinted lens but do not want one of NoIR’s darkest gray filters.
Filter 21 is best suited to brighter outdoor conditions and environments where glare is bothersome. NoIR includes it under its glare sunglasses and also lists sports, running and cycling among its applications.
It may be useful for everyday outdoor activities such as walking, shopping, sporting events, recreation and other situations where daylight or reflected glare feels uncomfortable.
Yes. Choose one of the fit-over frame styles if you need to wear Filter 21 over your regular prescription eyeglasses.

Filter 21 is primarily a neutral gray glare-reducing lens, not a colored contrast filter like amber or orange. Gray is useful when you want to reduce overall brightness while keeping colors looking relatively natural.
Filter 21 can be appropriate for daytime driving in bright or moderate sunlight, because its 28% VLT falls within the medium-tint range commonly recommended for daytime driving. The neutral gray lens also reduces brightness without strongly changing color perception.
They should not be used for night driving, twilight, or poor-visibility conditions. A 28% VLT lens is too dark for those situations.
I would add that section directly after “What lighting is Filter 21 best for?” because that is where a shopper would naturally look for it.
